Sleep Debt

You know how they always say you should get 8-9 hours of sleep a night? Well, I usually get 5-6. Probably pretty normal, but also probably pretty unhealthy. Anyway, I was reading  this article  about sleep debt, and it made me think more about how I really should be making it a priority to get regular sleep. Sigh... It's just that there are only so many hours in a day, and I spend most of those at work, so... going to bed early is taking away a lot of my "me" time! :( Still though, if consistently losing sleep is super unhealthy, and possibly even cutting years from my life, in the long run, maybe it's worth it. Hmm... Or maybe I just need to quit my day job and become the night owl I was meant to be. Lol.

New Year's Resolutions

I think I need to add to my list of New Year's resolutions... do not kill plants! My thumb is notoriously black, but plants are just so pretty so I keep buying them. At least I'm better at keeping cats alive. ;) I did buy a bunch of plants this weekend, in case you were wondering where I was going with this subject. It makes my living room feel so much fresher! And hey, if I do manage to kill them, what's a few dollars for a month of freshness?

Before and After: De-Cluttering my Desk

I went crazy today at Staples and went on an office-supply shopping spree. ;) I've always wanted to do that! I love office supplies. Always have. Probably why I ended up in the receptionist career. Anyway, my goal was to organize my mess of a desk. Mission accomplished! Now I can play around online on my cozy bed while viewing a clean desk in the corner instead of a messy one. Lol.

Adventures at New Years

As some of you know, I have hypoglycemia . Technically, hypoglycemia is a symptom of something (such as diabetes) - it means "low blood sugar". Doctors have yet to figure out what is causing mine, though. Unfortunately. Needless to say, I just have to make sure I eat every 3-4 hours and I'm fine. However... Yesterday I forgot to eat dinner. What can I say... I was distracted by my day off, reading blogs, knitting, generally lazing around. 10:30pm rolled around and I suddenly realized I had a splitting headache! I glance at the clock and realize what time it was. 10:30!! I stood up to make myself something to eat and got super nauseated. The funny thing about hypoglycemia is that the main symptom is nausea... and the main cure is eating something. Kind of ironic, I know, since eating is generally the last thing I desire to do when I'm nauseated. Anyway... I quickly threw a frozen pizza in the oven and downed a glass of Kool-Aid. As I lay on the couch listen...

Eating Alone

I was sitting alone at lunch today, like I usually do, reading my book and eating soup and a sandwich. The smells of the sandwich shop wafted pleasantly in on the winter breeze as the front door opened and closed repeatedly. Ding ding! went the door. People walked past me to order their food, but I didn't pay them much attention. One lady carried a beautiful, patchwork bag with her and it made me wonder if that type of thing would sell well online. Just as I began to ponder the logistics of buying a sewing machine, fabrics, and the other things needed to sell such a bag, another lady popped her head into my field of vision. I jumped, startled, as she'd approached suddenly from behind me. In the busy din of the crowded shop, I hadn't heard her walk up. "Do you mind if I take this chair?" she asked, hand on the wooden chair across from me, ready to steal it away. Was it that obvious that I was eating alone? I thought, slightly insulted. What if I'd b...

A Tornado in Oregon

images via There was a tornado in Oregon today! About an hour from my house, actually, in Aumsville, Oregon. Freaky! No, tornados are not common in Oregon. Very, very uncommon actually. The news guys said we rank 45th or lower in the list of states likely to get a tornado. Craziness!! Fortunately, no serious injuries or deaths have been reported. The tornado touched down around 11:40 am this morning, destroying about a dozen homes and buildings. For the record, I believe Aumsville is a super small town (I've never actually been there), so I think it pretty much destroyed the town. I'm just glad everyone is okay!

That time I thought I heard 1000 hornets but it was actually a stadium of vuvuzelas.

image via I'm a sucker for big events, even if they represent things I wouldn't normally be interested in in everyday life. Something about the group excitement really gets me excited. Hence the reason why I was (attempting) to watch the World Cup on Sunday. I say attempting because there was this REALLY ANNOYING buzzing sound going on in the background. I wondered if it was my t.v., or perhaps the network having interference issues. Whatever the case, it made it thoroughly unwatchable. I kid you not, it sounded like a 1,000 hornets buzzing around, trying to sting you. Then... This morning, I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts , and they immediately started complaining about these South African horns during the World Cup! Ha! Turns out I wasn't imagining things. What I was hearing was an instrument called a vuvuzela . Apparently they are really popular with South African soccer fans. Not sure why. Anyway, just glad to know I wasn't crazy, and I r...
